URBAN ARCHITECTURE LABORATORY ual » news | postgrad | projects | publications | teaching | staff | partners CURTAIN CALL Melbourne's Mid-century Curtain Walls Marika Neustupny Melbourne: RMIT Press, 2006 ![]() This book situates and documents exemplary modernist curtain-wall buildings in Melbourne through critical essays, photographic and drawing studies, focusing on fabric arrangement and construction detailing as design questions. The book was developed through a cycle of RMIT Architecture urban research electives, with students participating in guided research and employing common documentation procedures. Marika Neustupny is a Principle of the Melbourne practice NMBW Architecture Studio, with Nigel Bertram and Lucinda McLean. She teaches regularly in the RMIT Architecture program in the Upperpool Design studio and Urban Research Elective course areas, and supervises in the UAL Major Project Design Thesis - Urban Architecture Stream. Recent design studios projects include the Rapt! Laboratory for Social Space Melbourne workshop with Mauro Baracco, Atelier Bow Wow (Japan) and Taira Nishizawa (Japan). The exhibition speculates on the potential of photography's role in the construction and representation of the city, in particular our city, Melbourne. The installation is further activated through its establishment as a meeting room in which various architects, artists, designers and craft practitioners will convene to discuss their work and the role that the texture of the built environment plays in their engagement with and understanding of the city. Urban Fabric features graphics by AM Editions. Peta Carlin studied architecture prior to pursuing architectural ideas through the construction of images. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT University, where she tutors in architecture.
