DESIGN HUB AWARDED $28.6 MILLION FEDERAL FUNDING
Funding boon for better teaching and learning
RMIT Openline News
December 12, 2008
RMIT will get $28.6 million from the Federal Government’s Education Investment Fund to build a collaborative research facility, the Design Hub, and $16.7 million from the new one-off Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Higher Education. This large high-rise urban project on the old CUB site is to house the new RMIT Design Hub, an interdisciplinary design research facility. The building has been designed to attain the highest standards of sustainable design and will employ an innovative operable  solar cell cladding system forming a climactically responsive second skin that will reduce the need for cooling in summer and heating in winter. It is integrated with the other new building developments on the CUB site to contribute to a comprehensive water recycling system.

A long-running campaign to showcase Australian architecture and encourage the replacement of the aging Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale has been reactivated with Venice Biennale New Australian Pavilion: Di Stasio Ideas Competition. In an open competition, conceived to add momentum to growing support for the replacement of the current building, architects were invited to submit a conceptual proposal of their vision for a new Australian Pavilion. The unrestrictive nature of the project has encouraged some radical architectural solutions and aims to excite the imagination of both the public and the authorities.

RMIT ARCHITECTURE ACADEMICS WIN PREMIER'S DESIGN AWARD, 2008
Paul Minifie and Jan van Schaik
Practice: Minifie Nixon
"Australian Wildlife Centre, Healesville"
winner:
State of Design Premier's Design Awards, Cultural Award, 2008

Judge’s Comment:
“This is an outstanding example of design innovation in the area of complex geometries/mathematics and architecture that has been effective in delivering excellent outcomes for the client. Contemporary architecture is littered with twisted hulks that had as their unfortunate origin, a metaphor in mathematical models such as the Möbius Strip or fractal geometries. This building however, uses such models intelligently to generate rich spatial, material and pattern outcomes.”
